  • The Story Behind Matar Paneer (History):

Matar Paneer is one of the most popular paneer dishes in North Indian cuisine, a true home-style classic. It combines soft paneer cubes ("paneer") and sweet green peas ("matar") in a simple, flavorful tomato-onion gravy. Its origins are in the Punjab region, where it's a staple for a simple yet satisfying vegetarian meal. Unlike its richer cousins like Shahi Paneer or Paneer Butter Masala, Matar Paneer is an everyday dish, celebrated for its comforting and wholesome nature.

  • Ingredients (English):

  • 200g Paneer (cubed), 1 cup Green Peas, 2 tbsp Oil, 1 large Onion (pureed), 1 tbsp Ginger-Garlic Paste, 2 large Tomatoes (pureed), Spices (turmeric, red chili, coriander powder), ½ tsp Garam Masala, Salt to taste, ¼ cup Fresh Cream (optional).

  • Method (English):

  • Make Gravy: Heat oil. Sauté onion puree until golden. Add ginger-garlic paste.

  • Cook Masala: Add tomato puree and powdered spices. Cook until oil separates.

  • Combine & Cook: Add green peas, paneer, 1 cup of water, and salt. Cover and simmer for 10-12 minutes.

Finish: Stir in garam masala and cream (if using). Serve hot.

Pro Tips & Fun Facts (Tidbits):

  • For a vibrant green color, use fresh or frozen peas and avoid overcooking them. If using fresh peas, you can blanch them for a minute before adding them to the gravy. The base of this curry is a well-cooked "bhuna" masala, meaning you should sauté the onion-tomato mixture until the oil clearly separates from the paste. This step is crucial for developing a deep, rich flavor.

    Instant Pot Method:

  • Use "Sauté" mode to make the gravy. Add paneer, peas, ½ cup water, and salt. Pressure cook on "High" for 2 minutes. Quick Release. Stir in garam masala and cream.

  • Air-Fryer Method (For paneer):

  • Toss paneer cubes with a little oil and air fry at 380°F (190°C) for 5-7 minutes until lightly golden. Add to the finished gravy.

  • How To Make It Vegan

  • To make this vegan, replace Paneer with cubed extra-firm Tofu (lightly fried) and use Oil instead of ghee. If your recipe calls for cream, use a splash of coconut milk.
